Downhill is one of the fastest growing segments of mountainbiking . In the(?) most of all cases the downhill rider reaches the top of the mountain, or what ever by lift. Pedaling up to the top of the trail is nearly impossible because a downhill bike is too heavy and it would be an agony.
Since 1990 the technology used for Downhill cycling is getting more and more complicated. Nowadays, Downhill bikes are well developed and the most modern technology is involved into them. Such a modern bike has a big disadvantage: its weight. A Downhill bike weights between 18 and 25 kilogramms(würde ich eher in Lbs angeben wenns in Englisch ist) . They usually have a full-suspension design and a suspension travel of 200mm. A downhill bike is also equipped with hydraulic disc brakes , whose discs have diameter of 203mm. That's necessary to be able to control one's bike in every situation, e.g when you need to slow down. A chainguide is needed to keep the chain on the chainring, where it should be! Tyres with a large volume are essential to have enough grip on the trails. The rest of the components are constructed for durability. They have to bear enormous forces, which develope during a downhill ride. A low centre of gravity helps to stay stable on the bike in difficult and technical situations. The price for such a DH race bike starts around 4000 sFr.
